Biography

Konrad Graf was born 1964 in Singen/Hohentwiel (Germany). From 1984 on, he studied in Freiburg first musicology and from 1985 on percussion and timpani with Prof. Bernhard Wulff until he received his diploma as orchestral musician in 1991. At the same time, he took lessons from renowned percussionists and timpanists in Germany, France and Switzerland. The “Institute für Neue Musik” and the collaboration with the “Experimentalstudio” of the SWR particularly influenced his time in Freiburg. During his studies, he already gave concerts with symphonic orchestras, various ensembles for New and Old Music as well as Big Bands and Jazz formations. Within this period, the perennial collaboration with Luigi Nono has to be especially highlighted.

After having completed three years of a temporary employment as timpanist and percussionist at the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, his first permanent position led Konrad Graf to the Radio Symphony Orchestra Basel as principal percussionist and asssistant solo timpanist from 1989 to 1990. Since 1991, Konrad Graf is member of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and at present, he holds the position of solo percussionist and assistant solo timpanist. From 2001 to 2005, Konrad Graf had a lectureship at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt; furthermore, he gives lessons for percussionists in Germany and abroad.

In addition to his versatile work with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra covering music of four centuries, Konrad Graf’s area of expertise is completed by numerous temporary jobs in other orchestras as well as soloistic activities, chamber music, baroque music, Modern Music and Jazz. His most recent project is the ensemble “Schwarz/Weiß” (organ/euphonium/percussion), whose first CD will be released soon. Graf’s main concern in all his musical projects always is the quest for the best possible sound and the further development of instruments and playing techniques and skills.

Konrad Graf toured nearly all European countries as well as South America, the United States of America, China, Taiwan, Korea and often Japan with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. It is also with “his” orchestra that he gave several concerts as soloist, amongst others Russell Smith’s “Percussion Concerto” and Toru Takemitsu’s “From Me Flows What You Call Time” for five percussionists and orchestra. In 2000, he realized this piece of music also with the percussionists and the orchestra of the SWR Stuttgart. He also played as soloist in the concert series “Musica Viva” of “Bayerischer Rundfunk” in Munich.

As a guest artist of the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt, Konrad Graf toured the United Kingdom and the USA. In 2009 he also played with the german rockgroup “scorpions”.
