One of the most active and eclectic contemporary Italian musicians, Carrano has been involved, for the last 20 years, in an intense musical career in groups and as a soloist, with some of the most important groups in Italy and abroad.
He began studying percussion with 2 years in the Conservatory “L. Refice” dell’ Aquila, under the Maestro Striano. He immediately became involved in the study of ethnic percussion with teachers of the calibre of Luis Agudo, Roberto Evangelisti, Gregorio Hernandez, Angel “Chino” Chang, Reinaldo Hernandez, Glen Velez and Abdoullah Mohamed.
Over the years he has collaborated with artists such as Teresa De Sio, Mimmo Locasciulli, Ornella Vanoni, Fabrizio de Andrè, Karl Potter, Massimo Moriconi, Mariapia De Vito, Rita Marcotulli, Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare , Lucilla Galeazzi, Tony Esposito, Michele Ascolese, Eric Daniel, Elio e le storie tese, Indaco, Prem Joshua, Rodolfo Maltese, Francesco di Giacomo, Pierluigi Balducci Quartethno and Umberto Sangiovanni.
He has also been involved regularly as a collaborator with the composers Luis Bacalov (who received an Oscar for the music for the film “The Postman”), Germano Mazzocchetti, Nicola Piovani (who received an Oscar for the music for the film “Life is Beautiful”), Tony Carnevale , Ambrogio Sparagna, Alessio Vlad.
Carrano has composed and performed music for the choreographers such as Felix Ruchert, Lucina De Martis, Choronde, Hal Yamanouchi, Paolo Proietti, Gisella Speranza Johnson and Caterina Genta. He has also played for dance stages run by Jean Godin, Finola Cronin, Felix Ruchert, Bob Curtis and David Parsons.
Carrano has regularly played for the Rai Orchestra of Rome (Italian Broadcasting Corporation). In 1996 he was the first percussionist in Italy to direct the musical score for a TV program (“Mi manda Lubrano”).
He has also worked in the theatre with, amongst others, Attilio Corsini, Mario Missiroli, Giorgio Albertazzi, Leo De Berardinis and Fabio Cavalli.
Carrano’s interests have also stretched to composing and performing music for cartoons “Il cerchio e la soglia” directed by his brother Leonardo Carrano, winner of the V-ART Cagliari Public Competition, which received a special mention at the Fano Film Festival.
He has worked as the musical director of the mime company Teatro dell’opera, Rome.
His teaching career includes work on Multi-percussion at the “Timba”, Rome and, as Course Director of Percussion at Milan, Verona and Modena.
He is currently engaged as a teacher at the Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio and he is a Coordinator in the Faculty of Percussion at the University of Music, Rome.
He holds seminars for percussionists and is a ‘musical trainer’ for actors and dancers at an international level. He has collaborated with the group “Atelier Formazione” in a professional training project “Team Rhythm”.
Carrano has been a constant member of the jury for the International Competition for Creative Percussionists, held every year in Laigueglia (SV), he has also been a regular member of the jury in the National Competition B.I.A.
In the context of baroque music, Carrano has worked with leading international ensembles under the direction Renee Jacobs and Alessandro De Marchi. He has also collaborated with the Cologne Concert Orchestra and the Ensemble Arpeggiata.
Working with the “Atelier Formazione”, Milan, he has directed his training methods into professional training projects.
For several years he has worked with the therapist Vedanta Aspioti from the “Osho Institute for intuition”.
From 1993 to the present day he has been an honorary member of the “Sociedad per Cuba” association for Cuban Percussionist around the world.
He has been reviewed by important journals and newspapers including:
La Repubblica, L’Unità, Stereo play, Percussioni, Drum Club, El Periodico (Spagna), L’alto Adige, Il Messaggero. The journals Drum Club and Cous Cous have dedicated special editions to him.
