How we make it

Djembes

Raw logs of plantation grown Mahogany Wood.
Mahogany logs are scaled rough-cut.
First phase of shaping the djembe on a lathe.
The interior is hollowed out.
This is how the djembes look after being turned on the lathe. The central core is later removed.
The djembes are hand-carved.There is no substitute for this level of craftsmanship.
The inside of the bowl is handcarved which tunes and shapes the sound.
The goatskin head goes on and the tuning ropes are tightened.
The extra tuning rope is tied into a carrying strap.
