Alex Pertout Ensemble, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra


Chilean born Alex Pertout is an award-winning artist who for decades has been recognised as one of Australia's leading percussionists and with credits on hundreds of albums and motion picture soundtracks is undeniably one of Australia's most recorded musicians. Alex has also attained credits with television orchestras, in countless live performances, in the theatre, as a recording artist and record producer as well as a respected educator. 

He is a founding member of the Australian Art Orchestra which has toured Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania, has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, has recording, performance and television orchestra credits with an array of artists including Powderfinger, Badi Assad, Shane Howard, James Morrison, Paul Kelly, Casiopea, Jackson Browne, Little River Band w/John Farnham, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Daryl Braithwaite, Goanna, The Black Sorrows, Tony Gould, Dave Valentin, Ute Lemper, Charlelie Couture, Redgum, Tommy Emmanuel, Tina Arena, Kate Ceberano, Broderick Smith, Tom E Lewis, Brian Brown and Cezary Skubiszewski among many others. In the theatre he has been a featured percussionist in The Lion King. 

Alex has produced cds as a multi instrumentalist, composer and performer, is the author of 'Sight Reading: The Rhythm Book' released worldwide by US publishers Mel Bay, is a regular contributor to Drumscene magazine and is endorsed internationally by Meinl percussion and Vic Firth sticks. Alex graduated with High Distinction from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), holds a Master of Philosophy in Music degree from the Australian National University (ANU) and is a Senior Lecturer in the Jazz & Improvisation department at the Faculty of VCA and MCM, University of Melbourne.

He has an award-winning project with vocalist, composer Nilusha Dassenaike titled Alex & Nilusha which presented their project in concerts, jazz clubs, festivals, on radio and television in Australia as well as in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mexico and Cuba. Their recordings feature an impressive gathering of outstanding national and international guests including legendary US guitarist Mike Stern, Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy, pianist Paul Grabowsky, indigenous singer-songwriter Tom E Lewis, Latin-jazz flautist Dave Valentin, guitarists Leonard Grigoryan, Puerto Rican pianist Edsel Gomez, Cuban violinist William Roblejo and trumpetist Miroslav Bukovsky to name a few. 

Their debut album 'Moments In Time' received critical acclaimed including an ABC Jazz 'Album Of The Week' and an ABC Jazz Notes 'Top 5 Australian Jazz Albums of 2012' endorsement, while their latest release 'Tales To Tell' recorded in Melbourne, New York, Buenos Aires, London and Havana has received high praise and was awarded the 'Premio Internacional' at the 2015 Cubadisco Music Awards in Havana, Cuba.
