Specializing in Afro Cuban hand percussion, Marcelo has appeared in, and recorded audio on several television advertising campaigns for Pepsi, Tic Tac, Capital One Finance Corp., Siemens Mobile Phones and Tooheys Extra Dry.
He has also performed on national television, having appeared live on programs including ‘Mornings with Kerry Anne’, Chanel V, as well as community based TVS programs.
He has also appeared on international television in Canada, Puerto Rico, United States and Cuba.
Marcelo has had many influence over the years having had private tuition with several established master percussionists, the likes of Jose Marquez Snr (Syd, Aus) Pablo Batista (Alicia Keys, & many more) Johnny Almendra (NYC legend), John BATANGA Berdeguer (Jovenes Del Barrio),Manuel EGUI Castrillo (Arturo Sandoval, Jennifer Lopez, Berklee College of Music),Daniel Lopez (Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan), Jorge Luis Torres ‘Papiosco’ (Cubanismo, Klimax), Betun (Cubanismo, Bar Buena Vista, OPUS 13), as well as Jose Luis Quintana aka CHANGUITO (Former Los Van Van & Afro Cuban percussion master), and Miguel ANGA Diaz - R.I.P (Irakere, Buena Vista Social Club, Afro Cuban All Stars, Steve Coleman, Omar Sosa, Roy Hargrove and many more).
Marcelo has also spent extensive time in Havana, Cuba on multiple visits where he was privileged to study and perform as a special guest with some of the most respected, influential and popular musical acts and musicians which Cuba has given birth to, including Adalberto Alvarez y Su Son, N.G La Banda, Bamboleo, Azucar Negra, Conjunto Folklorico Nacional, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and many more. In 2010 Marcelo was a featured special guest performer with NG La Banda for the Havana International Jazz Festival and surrounding events.
While in Cuba, Marcelo also deeply explored the roots of Afro Cuban percussion, and was chosen to be initiated into the Omo Aña (ancient Afro Cuban brotherhood sworn to the sacred ‘Bata’ drums). He has solidified his style and technique, based firmly in Afro Cuban tradition, with a modern approach.
Marcelo has also shared the stage with several highly respected international acts including Alicia Keys band (USA), Osvaldo Chacon (Cuba/UK), Sheila E (USA), Ozomatli (USA), and Cubanismo (Cuba) amongst many others.
Marcelo today is a highly in demand freelance percussionist, lending his musical versatility to RnB, Funk, Jazz, Pop, Reggae and DJ nightclub acts, as well as currently performing with several respectable local Latin ensembles, and is currently in the process of completing a recording with an explosive 12 piece Afro Cuban/Latin Jazz project led by the internationally renowned Cuban musician, band leader, composer and arranger Armando Garcia Perez aka ‘Armandito’.
Based in Sydney, Australia, Marcelo offers private tuition and has a stable of up and coming percussionists under his tutelage. He is also available for live clinics, workshops, group tuition, performance and studio session work.
