Samuel Wootton - born 1988 in Filderstadt, Germany

Samuel Wootton, percussionist and composer, is a an exceptionally versatile and active musician, at home in classical, jazz and pop music.

He received first lessons on piano and recorder at the age of six, in Kempten. He won prizes at national level in the competition 'Jugend Musiziert', and had lessons on organ and latin percussion.

From 2005 onwards he focussed on classical percussion, qualifying to study at the 'Hochschule für Musik und Theater, München' in 2009, under Adel Shalaby. He gained his Performers Diploma with distinction in June 2013. He completed a teaching diploma in 2014, then moved to the 'Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Hamburg' to study jazz percussion with Marcio Doctor, Mark Nauseef und Roland Peil.

Participation in many workshops and master classes with Peter Sadlo, Emmanuel Sejourne, Nebojsa Zivkovic, Percadu, Dave Liebman, Roger Hanschel, Ronny Barrak, Trilok Gurtu and others, contributed to his comprehensive musical training.

As a classical percussionist, Samuel Wootton tours regularly to Egypt and Oman with the ‘Munich Percussion Ensemble’ under Adel Shalaby, playing with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, in ensembles and as a soloist. As a soloist he has played in the Philharmonie and the Prinzregenten Theater in Munich, in the Cairo Opera House and the Alexandria Opera House in Egypt, and in theRoyal Opera House Muscat, Oman.

Samuel Wootton has played repeatedly with celebrated soloists, including Peter Sadlo and Adel Shalaby on national and international stages.

As a jazz percussionist he has played with the NDR Big Band, Trilok Gurtu, Ibrahim Keivo and Ronny Barrack. He is one of the creative brains in the band 'Pecco Billo', is in demand for various jazz, world music, pop and hip-hop formations and plays as a session musician on numerous CD productions. As a guest musician, he plays with the Jazzrausch Bigband, the Urban Academy featuring Maria Joao and Omid Soltani, and he plays regularly with the Maria Rui Band, the Armando Quattrone Band and for the musical The Lion King.

He writes the music for and leads his own band, Wootton's Toy Story.

He held a scholarship with the „Andechser Orff-Akademie des Münchner Rundfunkorchesters“ in 2010 and 2011, is a member of the „Andechser Festspielorchester“, and has played with the Münchner Sinfoniker, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, and the Bayerischen Staatsoper München.

Competing in the „Kulturkreis Gasteig Musikpreis“ in Munich, 2012, Samuel Wootton won first prize as a soloist, aswell as the audience award for best performer.

He has held a scholarship from the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Foundation since April 2014 in Munich, and, since January 2015, in Hamburg. In October 2016 he received a scholarship from the Oscar & Vera Ritter Foundation.
